Stuart has worked in private architectural practice, designing and/or delivering a diverse range of projects, including private houses, PFI schools, a recording studio, offices and research laboratories, in London, Liverpool and Edinburgh, on-time and within budget. He also ran his own practice for five years. Stuart has worked for main contractors, including as Head of Design for Kier Construction Major Projects, being extensively involved in reviewing Employer’s Requirements, value engineering solutions for tenders and developing D&B proposals for construction. He managed a 25-strong team of design managers delivering the Stirling Prize-winning botanical sciences laboratories in Cambridge, a 1480-cell prison, 18 schools, 3 hospitals, residential and student accommodation, offices, defence projects and retail developments. He lead the writing of the pre-construction and construction processes for the whole Kier Construction division and standardised the consultant appointment scopes and design responsibilities matrix. He was one of ‘five wise men’ selected to validate the readiness of BimXtra software and to strengthen project procedures to ensure a major accident couldn’t reoccur. Stuart has being preparing independent reports and giving expert opinion for over 14 years, in over 100 disputes, of which so far six have resulted in appearances in the witness box. He has also assisted in mediations and received seven appointments to act as an adjudicator. He was a member of the panels for construction adjudicators held by the RIAS, the CIArb, the RICS and the CIC. He was a guest lecturer at Edinburgh and Heriot Watt University giving lectures to architecture students on contract management. Stuart has been a councillor of the RIAS, a member of their Contracts & Appointments and Insurance & Liability Committees. He was retained by the RIAS to provide advice on contractual and appointment advice to architects. He represented the Construction Industry Council on the DTI’s ‘Improving Payment Practices in the Construction Industry’ task force, acted as a misconduct investigator for the Architect’s Registration Board (arb). In the past he has lectured on the CDM Regulations and more recently on ‘Design Co-ordination & BIM’, ‘Design Process’, ‘Building Functionality’ and ‘A practical approach to Design and Build’.”
